Freeing ourselves from fossil fuel depenency is the root of creating a sustainable world. Investment in clean, renewable energy is investment in our independence.

Every hour, the sun radiates more energy onto the earth's surface than the entire human population uses in a year. There is as much wind power potential off our coasts as the current capacity of all power plants in the United States combined, according to a new report sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, and General Electric.

The argument that fossil fuel is the only energy source that can meet our needs is outdated. The Diesel engine was originally designed to run on Vegetable oil. Biodiesel is a clean alternative that can be made from recycled cooking oil, and has nearly 80 percent fewer carbon emissions than regular diesel fuel.

Ask your local power company how your electricity is generated. Some power companies offer wind power credits. Most public utilities, along with state and local governments offer tax rebates and incentives to install solar panels and water heating systems.

Advancements in harnessing human power have already led to dance floor powered nightclub and fitness centers. What might the future bring? Imagine piezoelectric generators built into a pair of shoes that provide enough electricity to charge your cell phone or ipod. On a larger scale, entire streets and infrastructures might act as generators that collect kinetic energy from vehicle and foot traffic.

This is about getting away from old ways of thinking, and harnessing the clean, abundant energy that nature offers. Hope is a renewable power. So is will.
